Grammys Fashion 2014

1/30/2014

The Grammys were last Sunday and like the Golden Globes, I decided that it be a good idea to highlight and share some of my fav fashions of the evening with you guys (I feel like this is going to be a regular occurrence after TV's major award shows).

But before the fashion ensues can we just talk about the Grammys for a minute, I mean what a show! Between Lorde's eerie yet intriguing performance of "Royals", Taylor Swift's hair-flipping ballad of "All Too Well", or Jay Z and Beyonce's sexy opening number as Hollywood's favorite "it couple", it was surely a night to remember.

I think one of my favorite parts of the show though was when Macklemore sang "Same Love" while Queen Latifah along with Madonna married 33 couples in the aisles of the audience. It was so beautiful that even my dad was crying in his lounge chair.

Looking back, this might have been my favorite Grammys to date.

So without further adieu, here are some of my favorite garments from the night. I got to say, I was a little upset with the range of showstopping red-carpet looks shown, but as always there are invariably a couple stars who turn it out and look incredible, and below are my picks of those stylish stars.

Picture
Queen B. can do no wrong. Seriously. I mean I'm not one of those die-hard, know-every-lyric-to-every-song Beyonce fans, but I can recognize when Beyonce looks fabulous (which is most everytime), and boy does she look stunning in this Michael Costello number. That white against her stunning skin and the trendy short bob with the bordeaux lip; this outfit is styled impeccably from head to toe. Ugh, perfection.

I have to admit, Taylor Swift is't one of the people who I most look forward to seeing on the red carpet, simply because she wears pretty much the same thing at every award show. I mean she always looks stunning no-doubt, but it almost always leaves me with something more daring to be desired. However this Gucci Premiere, chain-link gown that Taylor wore Sunday night was absolutely jaw-dropping. She looked so gorgeously statuesque and her soft makeup just added to the overall beauty of the ensemble. A+ Taylor!

Rita Ora. Oh how you amaze me with your varied and stylish fashion choices. I love Rita, I feel like we would be best friends in another life (just kidding, she's way too cool for me). But seriously this short, metallic dress by Lanvin was such a cool choice for the Grammys and I'm in love with her short new blonde bob. Tres chic, tres cool.

"Iconic British Luxury" Since 1856

“Every year the women of New York leave the past behind and look forward to the future…this is known as Fashion Week.”

Carrie Bradshaw says it all.

One of my favorite parts of the coming of a new season are the new fashions from the hottest runways; and the fashion show I seemingly anticipate most every season are the spectacular creations by Burberry.

Burberry is quintessentially classic and cool, always leaving me with the overwhelming desire to move to London, where it seems like everything's happening. Suffice to say that I nearly freaked when I saw their Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Christopher Bailey really outdid himself this time. This runway was femininity at its best with its pretty pastels and elegant lace detailing, and with temperatures plunging into the negatives where I live, thanks to this so-called "polar vortex", it's nice to fantasize about spring, summer and warmer days to come.

I've watched this runway at least a billion times, and consistently find myself humming the songs from the show aloud. Weird I know, I'm kind of obsessed. With Harry Styles sitting front row and my girl Cara Delevingne closing the show, it's hard not to be.

Until Next Time!

Tea Time

For as long as I can remember I've wanted to get dressed up and go to a fancy afternoon tea in the city. Maybe it was the adorable finger fare or the romance of it all, but there always seemed something so luxurious about getting dolled up in your fanciest attire and attending an elegant tea downtown. You can imagine my excitement then, when my aunt decided she would take my sister, mom, cousin, and I to a tea at The Peninsula as a gift for Christmas! Below I've included some of my favorite pics from the evening. I had such a lovely time catching up with my relatives and will be dreaming tonight of these red velvet pastries they served with this to-die-for cream cheese filling. I could have eaten a million.

Golden Globes Fashion 2014

1/16/2014

Hey guys! I'm so sorry that I haven't posted in some time but in the midst of first semester finals it's been hard to conjure up some spare blogging time, but I'm back and ready to write!

Now onto a more entertaining topic, the Golden Globes were this past Sunday and I've been jonesing to do a review on the fabulous fashions shown. My family and I love the Golden Globes, or any award show for that matter. The celebrities, the red-carpet fashions, it's like being a kid in a candy store full of beautiful people and dazzling garments. So without further adieu, here are some of my favorite looks from Sunday's Globes...

Picture
Starting off with one of my favorite looks of the night was Emma Watson in Christian Dior. I mean how beautiful is this girl? Everything about this look is perfection from the red lip to the sleek low-bun, and don't even get me started on that open back and those insanely gorgeous black pants. Chic, cool, sophisticated, love it.

Picture
Onto yet another beautiful woman in red, Lupita Nyong'o was one of the most talked about celebrities to hit the red carpet Sunday night. She stunned in Ralph Lauren Spring 2014 with this marvelous caped gown. And that bright red color against her lovely skin tone, so elegant!

Picture
This delicate dress Cate Blanchett wore by Armani Privé was grace and elegance mashed up into one stylish ensemble. I love watching Cate on the red carpet because she almost always takes fashion risks, and they almost always pay off. Yet another win for Cate!

Picture
Call me crazy, but there's something that I find oddly intriguing about Zoe Saldana's hit-or-miss Prabal Gurung dress. I know a lot of people hated it and I wanted to at first, but for some reason I kept coming back to it and the more I did, the more I fell in love. There's something about that black with the light-ballerina pink that when combined gave off a splendid feminine, romantic sort of vibe. I admire Zoe's risk-taking and whether you loved or hated it, at least it wasn't boring.
Until Next Time!

A Proper Introduction

1/5/2014

I guess you could say I'm finding some difficulty in starting this introduction. I mean how am I supposed to express in only a few terse paragraphs my personality, what makes me laugh, cry, or who I am as a person altogether. It's a difficult task which will hopefully become more clear the more I post, but I figured before writing anything else that I probably owe you guys a little more information about myself, so here it goes...

Hi I'm Marit, a junior in high school who's still trying to figure out her life. I'm pretty tall for my age coming in at 5'9", but someday I wish to be 5'10" like Cindy Crawford (ahh Clueless quotes). But on a serious note I'm a big fan of my height, no offense Cindy. I'm a sucker for romantic 80s movies (16 Candles, Say Anything, and Pretty in Pink are my jam) and I've been known to drink orange juice numerous times throughout the day; why limit the world's best juice to only one meal, that's all I'm saying.

Expressing myself through clothing is one of my favorite pastimes and I strongly believe that to be truly beautiful one must possess both beauty and brains. Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis are some of my fashion icons by virtue of the fact that along with style and grace, they constantly carry with them intellect and their charming wit, making them much more than a pretty face.

I love to express my thoughts and opinions, which in part was one of the reasons that I started Girl on the Verge in the first place. Through this blog I hope to share my ideas on pop culture, fashion, and my life as a girl on the verge of next season's latest creations, my dreams, and the future.

Here's to beginnings!

Helllooo 2014!

1/2/2014

The first of January is the turning of a new leaf, an opportunity to begin afresh if we so choose. It's a time where we say goodbye to the previous year and welcome the new one with open arms and hearts, hoping to goodness that with it comes more laughter, style, and love than the previous.

In my case, 2014 is all about living life to the fullest. Taking every opportunity and adventure by storm and not caring what people might say or think. Haters are always gonna hate, so do what you love because ultimately it's your life, you know. That in part, and the thousands of inspirational quotes I've read on Pinterest (believe me there are millions), is the reason why I've decided to start this blog. For months now I've wanted to start one of my very own, but have never gotten around to it, or I've been too nervous as to what its backlash might be so inevitably I put it on the back burner. But, come the new year I've finally decided to conquer my demons and take part in my passion for blogging. I'm so excited about this blog and can't wait to see what comes of it.

Starting Girl on the Verge has been my biggest adventure of 2014 so far and I can't wait to see what else the new year brings.

Happy New Year. Here's to being adventurous!

P.S. I added some inspirational quotes below that are a little cheesy, but you get the picture
