Yesterday officially marked the end of a glorious period of global congregation on the competitive world stage. A battle of strength, determination, and will power; I am of course talking about the 2014 World Cup in Brazil!! My family was pretty big on following the tournament this summer, and honestly it wasn't hard to get swept up in the fervor of it all with every commercial seemingly being about the cup (my fav was the McDonalds one where the men blocked the older lady from the oncoming splash of the bus--so cute!). What made this cup even more special was the fact that the team we'd hope would make it all the way was Germany. AHHH!!! My family's a pretty large percent German and all of my siblings take the gorgeous-sounding language (lol not), so we were pretty stoked when they ended up winning.
But even more than Germany's win, which was pretty awesome, the reason why I loved this year's World Cup so much and looked so forward to every match was the idea that the World Cup, as stereotypical or cheesy as it sounds, provides a means of the coming together of different countries to one arena, creating a mixing pot of religions, beliefs, and cultures. I love things like that. Be it the World Cup or the Olympics, creating a feeling of global unification is something that gets me every time. And the kick-ass soccer games don't hurt either!
I hope you guys found just as much enjoyment in this year's World Cup as me and my family, and below is a semi-blury-from-the-excitment picture of my sister and I celebrating Germany's win. The only thing that would have been sweeter would have been to be in Germany the night of the final!
